Lisa Kowalchuk is a sociologist at the University of Guelph. Prior to her recently completed study of nurses’ labor situation in El Salvador and Nicaragua, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), she researched social movements against health care privatization in El Salvador and the media’s coverage of those issues. She has also researched peasant protest to both extend and defend agrarian reform in that country. Kowalchuk teaches on social movements, gender and international development, and Latin America.
