Op-Ed: Using Hispanic Heritage Month as a Platform for Change


As the University of Pittsburgh celebrates its third annual Hispanic Heritage Month, let's admire the achievements Latinx at Pitt has made with regards to raising awareness about Latinidad! It is easy to forget amidst the dance lessons, research symposiums, game nights, and panels that many members of the Latinx community are still left out by confusing nomenclature that ultimately erases the complexity of Latinidad. In universities, the opportunity gap and elitism continue to suppress access to equitable education and resources for Latinx students, faculty, and staff. Is HHM the platform under which Pitt can better serve its Latinx students?

An Imaginary Oasis

I will try to explain, going from the simplest to the more complex reasons that have been uttered by different social groups. The former is definitely the government’s and mainstream media vision: those deaths are the result of criminal and vandal groups, who, taking advantage of social chaos, seek to destroy and steal as much as possible. Social “misfits” who need to be repressed without question. Two things need to be said regarding that point.
