As Latino people comprise an increasing proportion of the United States population, it is more and more pressing that non-Latino people understand who these people are, where they come from, and what role they play in our modern society. Latinos make up the largest minority group in the U.S. at around 58 million people, or 18% of the country’s population.
“To make it you have to be fully alive. I do my best to do that. I enjoy every moment because I believe that once we die, that’s it. We’re not coming back. Lovers come back. Styles come back. But time? It never comes”1.
Alejandro González Iñárritu’s triumph at this year’s Academy Awards stirred much discussion; but not all necessarily for good reasons. Before announcing the winner for best picture Sean Penn asked, “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?” Although this comment was intended to be a joke, the controversy that it generated perhaps detracted from González Iñárritu’s well-earned win and highlighted to the older-white-male dominated nature of the Oscars.
